What Is Sonic Dermaplaning?

Sonic dermaplaning is a non-invasive skincare procedure that gently “shaves away” dead skin cells while also removing vellus hair (commonly known as peach fuzz). Unlike traditional dermaplaning—which uses an open scalpel blade and must be performed by a doctor, nurse or licensed esthetician—sonic dermaplaning uses a specialized device and can be done at home. Intrigued? Let’s take a closer look.

What's the difference between sonic dermaplaning and traditional dermaplaning?

Both methods exfoliate and remove peach fuzz, but only sonic dermaplaning gives you added benefits—without the risks of an old-fashioned scalpel blade. The high-level sonic vibrations remove peach fuzz more effectively, optimize exfoliation and increase microcirculation, according to dermatologists.

The first sonic dermaplaning device on the market was DERMAFLASH, which was invented by Dara Levy, a stockbroker turned Med Spa owner. She was amazed by how confident women looked and felt after having a dermaplaning treatment at her spa, and after a brainstorm in the shower (funny how that always happens!) she decided that she wanted to create a high-tech device that allowed women to dermaplane at home.  Beauty and fashion industry bible Women’s Wear Daily called DERMAFLASH “the pioneer of at-home dermaplaning” and noted that over 1 million devices have been sold.

Do dermatologists recommend sonic dermaplaning?

Yes. Dermatologists recommend sonic dermaplaning to patients who want a safe and gentle way to exfoliate, de-fuzz and boost the benefits of their at-home skincare routine. “When you DERMAFLASH you are instantly taking away all of the peach fuzz and, at the same time, the top layer of dead skin cells. Your skincare will do what it’s designed to do instead of sitting stuck on top of dead skin cells,” say Dr. Arisa Ortiz, a dermatologist at UC San Diego Health, and the university’s director of laser and cosmetic dermatology.

The high-level sonic vibrations help loosen and lift away dead skin cells—and deliver more effective peach fuzz removal than manual dermaplaning. “The sonic vibrations not only assist in the exfoliation process but also help to get right under the peach fuzz for more effective removal,” explains Dr. Ortiz.

The sonic vibrations also increase circulation, which gives your skin additional anti-aging benefits. “Sonic vibrations gently stimulate microcirculation and bring fresh oxygenated blood to keep your skin healthy and vibrant, and further increase anti-aging benefits,” says Dr. Ortiz.

How does sonic dermaplaning work?

Sonic dermaplaning is a simple and straightforward process:

1. Cleanse your face to remove excess oil and dry it thoroughly.

2. Use one hand to gently pull your skin taut.

3. Hold your sonic dermaplaning device (like DERMAFLASH LUXE+) in your other hand, at a 45-degree angle against your skin.

4. Make short, light, feathery strokes over your skin’s surface.

You’ll be able to see dead skin and peach fuzz coming off—and the skin underneath will look fresher, smoother and brighter.

Will dermaplaning make my hair grow back thicker?

No. Your peach fuzz will not come back thicker, darker or faster. “Women have the misconception that if you remove the hair or cut the hair it’s going to go back thicker or darker and that’s just simply not true,” says Dr. Ortiz.  (Read more here.)

Will I cut myself if I dermaplane?

Sonic dermaplaning devices like DERMAFLASH LUXE+ have added safety features to prevent cuts—unlike old-fashioned scalpel blades with no safety guards or modern technology. The MicroFine Edge™ has a built-in safety cage that help prevents nicks and scrapes, so you can dermaplane without worrying.

What do people say about DERMAFLASH?

DERMAFLASH consistently earns 5-star reviews from beauty industry professionals and from customers. “I was hesitant to do something like this to my face for fear of cutting myself or having the hair grow back thicker and dark. That has not been the case at all. Not only is this tool incredibly safe but my skin feels amazing after using it,” says customer Natalie I.

Nordstrom customer “mamamandala” adds: “The state I live only allows a licensed medical professional, such as a doctor or PA, to perform dermaplaning. This can make it difficult and expensive to find someone who does this as part of a facial, so I decided to try this instead. I am pleased with the results.”

And as reviewer Saskia F. says: “This works somuch better than the disposable face razors I used to use. The peach fuzz is quickly and neatly taken off my face and my skin is left clear and bright. After my first use my husband complimented me on my bright skin.”

Since its launch, DERMAFLASH has won more than 30 industry awards from beauty authorities including New Beauty, Allure, Elle, Beauty Inc, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar and more. “It’s easy to use, and its sonic wave technology allows for closer hair removal and better exfoliation than a standard blade that you buy at the drugstore,” dermatologist Dr. Connie Yang told Elle.

We don’t want to brag, but we’re honored that so many women trust our “magic wand” to bring out the best in their skin. If you haven’t Flashed yet, what are you waiting for?
