What does dermaplaning do for your skin? We’re here to give you the answers and explain why sonic dermaplaning is a safe and gentle way to exfoliate, remove pesky peach fuzz and improve the quality of your skin (now and in the future).
What is dermaplaning?
Before we jump into what dermaplaning can do for your skin, we wanted to take a minute to explain what dermaplaning is. There are two different methods:
Traditional dermaplaning: During a traditional dermaplaning treatment, a licensed practitioner uses a surgical scalpel blade to carefully “scrape” the top layer of dead skin cells and peach fuzz from your skin’s surface. In untrained hands, open scalpel blades can be very dangerous—which is why traditional dermaplaning should only be performed by experienced professionals.
Sonic dermaplaning: Sonic dermaplaning uses an advanced, sonic-powered device to give you all the benefits of traditional dermaplaning, but without the risk. The LUXE+ Sonic Dermaplaning device uses a specially designed blade with a “safety cage” that prevents nicks and cuts, and the sonic vibrations allow the device to glide smoothly across your skin without skipping or tugging.
Now that you know the difference, let’s get to the good part… the top 5 benefits of sonic dermaplaning!
Benefit #1: Safe and gentle peach fuzz removal
If you want to remove pesky peach fuzz, sonic dermaplaning is the ideal way to do it. The blade used on the LUXE+ device has a series of “micro ridges” that protect delicate facial skin from nicks and scrapes—unlike a standard razor, which has a straight edge that’s much more likely to cut your skin. The sonic technology also gives you a much “closer shave” than a standard razor. “The sonic vibrations not only assist in the exfoliation process, but it also helps to get right under the peach fuzz for more effective removal,” says Dr. Arisa Ortiz, a board-certified dermatologist and director of laser and cosmetic dermatology at UC San Diego Health.
A lot of people who want to remove peach fuzz ask, “how long does dermaplaning last?” For most women, sonic dermaplaning once a week will keep your skin smooth and fuzz-free. And there’s no need to worry about peach fuzz growing back thicker. This myth has been making the rounds for ages and Dr. Ortiz is here to reassure you it’s 100% false: “Your peach fuzz will grow back exactly as it was before. No thicker, no darker, no different."
Benefit #2: Better skincare product penetration
Good skincare products are an investment… and if you’re anything like us, you want to get the most from every skincare dollar. What does that have to do with dermaplaning? A lot! Sonic dermaplaning gently exfoliates dead skin cells and build-up from your skin’s surface. When that build-up is gone, your favorite serums and moisturizers can penetrate more effectively.
“When you remove those dead skin cells, your skincare will work better because you are removing the barrier to penetration. A skincare routine without effective exfoliation is like taking a shower in a raincoat. When you use DERMAFLASH LUXE+ all of the beneficial active ingredients can sink right in and do what they are meant to do,” explains Dara Levy, DERMAFLASH founder. If you’re investing in a serum with proven skin-improving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides or Vitamin C, sonic dermaplaning is a must to help you get the most from every drop.
Benefit #3: Smoother, more natural-looking makeup
We’ve all blended on foundation expecting it to sit flawlessly—only to have it cake up and look unnatural (ugh). What causes cakey foundation? Makeup artists say dead skin cell build-up and peach fuzz are two of the most common culprits. When you apply foundation, any formula (whether it’s liquid, powder or cream) can cling to flakes, dry patches and peach fuzz—causing your makeup to cake up and look unnatural.
Sonic dermaplaning is your secret weapon for smooth, natural-looking foundation. When you remove peach fuzz and flaky dead skin cells, your canvas is prepped for a smooth and flawless application. “Skin prep is always the most important,” says celeb makeup artist Jenna Kristina, who uses LUXE+ Sonic Dermaplaning to create a smooth canvas for her clients. Benefit #4: Healthier, younger-looking skin
Dermatologists say regular sonic dermaplaning improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and acne scars. How? It’s all about exfoliation. In addition to sweeping away dull dead skin cells, regular exfoliation helps support cellular turnover and stimulate collagen production. Cellular turnover slows down with age, so giving it a boost with regular exfoliation means that your skin can shed dead skin cells more efficiently. Consistent exfoliation also helps promote the production of collagen, which gives your skin a youthful structure and healthy-looking elasticity.
Sonic dermaplaning can also help reduce the look of discoloration from sun damage or past acne breakouts. Dark spots from sun damage or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are formed when excess melanin “clumps up” into spots or patches. When you exfoliate, it helps to break up those pigmented dead cells and slough them off—revealing fresher, more even-looking skin underneath.
One more thing: only a facelift will give you super-dramatic lifted results, but sonic dermaplaning can give you a more lifted look. How is that possible? Dead skin cell buildup absorbs light, which causes your skin to look dull. When you remove that layer of built-up dead skin and peach fuzz, light is able to reflect off the high points of your face and give you an instantly more lifted look.
Benefit #5: Safe for all skin types (even sensitive skin)
If you have sensitive skin, it can be tough to find an exfoliator that works for you. Harsh chemical exfoliants can irritate sensitive skin, and they should be avoided by pregnant women for health and safety reasons. (Always talk to your doctor to find out what’s best for you.) Because sonic dermaplaning is a form of manual exfoliation, it doesn’t involve the use of harsh chemicals. LUXE+ also includes a “gentle” setting that’s ideal for sensitive skin types. Just one note: If you have acne or rosacea, never dermaplane over areas with active breakouts or inflammation. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to ask your dermatologist.
There you have it… five reasons why sonic dermaplaning will enhance your skincare routine and boost your glow, safely and easily.
