Does the idea of dermaplaning your face freak you out? We get it…and we are not going to dismiss your concerns or brush them off! What we are going to do is give you real answers that will put your fears to rest. Let’s get started.
Is dermaplaning at home safe?
Yes. Dermaplaning is a gentle method of exfoliating dead skin cells and removing vellus hair (aka peach fuzz) from your face. But here’s the key: When you’re dermaplaning at home, it’s essential to choose the best and safest tool for the job.
In a Med Spa or doctor’s office, trained professionals use sharp, surgical scalpel blades to dermaplane their client’s skin. If you’re thinking “um, that sounds like something I shouldn’t attempt at home,” you are exactly right. There’s a very real risk of cutting the skin with these open blades, which is why professional estheticians and Med Spa practitioners have specialized training and years of practice.
Some DIY dermaplaners resort to using a plastic eyebrow razor. But these cheap blades can cause nicks, cuts and irritation—whether from scraping the blade too aggressively over your skin, or from simply slipping and nicking yourself. (Ouch.) So what’s a girl to do if she wants to dermaplane at home the safe way? Enter sonic technology. LUXE+ Sonic Dermaplaning gives you the benefits of a Med Spa dermaplaning treatment, but without the risk. “The high-level sonic vibrations help the device glide across your face smoothly, without skipping or pulling on your skin like a cheapie razor can,” explains licensed esthetician Kendal Galette.
Now that you know what tool to use, let’s switch gears for a minute and tackle some other common fears about dermaplaning.
The fear: I’ll cut myself
The facts: As we mentioned above, when you use LUXE+ to dermaplane your face, the sonic technology allows the device to glide seamlessly without any skipping or scraping. But that’s not the only thing safeguarding your skin. Our founder Dara Levy wanted an added level of protection to make at-home dermaplaning as safe and effective as possible. Unlike the risky “open blade” found on surgical scalpels, our MicroFine Edges™ have a special Safey Cage that keeps your skin protected from nicks and cuts, while still giving you the closest shave. (Was it easy to create this custom-engineered Edge? Nope! Was it worth it? Yes!)
The fear: My peach fuzz will grow back thicker
The facts: We hear this concern all the time, and we don’t blame you for asking. Here’s the deal: Nothing you do to your skin’s surface will affect your hair follicles or change how your hair grows back. Only laser treatments or medication can affect hair follicles. Shaving or dermaplaning do not affect the hair follicle in any way, so any hair you remove using those methods will grow back exactly the same—no thicker, no darker, no differently.
Okayyy, you might be thinking, so why does the hair on my legs look thick and stubbly when it grows back? That is an excellent question and here’s the answer: The hair on your head, legs, armpits and bikini line is called “terminal hair.” It’s coarser, and when it grows back, it has a blunt tip that causes it to temporarily appear thicker. Your facial fuzz (aka “vellus hair”) is fine, soft and completely different from the terminal hair—so it won’t grow back with that super-blunt tip.
The fear: I’ll break out if I dermaplane
The facts: You may have read about or even seen videos of people who’ve experienced breakouts after dermaplaning. Can it happen? Yes. Does it have to happen? Absolutely not! The key is in the preparation. First, always, always, always use a fresh Edge. This is crucial, because if you dermaplane with an old, used Edge you’ll run the risk of transferring acne-causing bacteria from the blade to your face.
Second, prep your canvas by cleansing with PREFLASH. Again, this has to do with preventing the spread of acne-causing bacteria, which literally lives in oil on your skin’s surface. You want your skin free of oil before gliding your Edge over your face—and we formulated PREFLASH to thoroughly remove all surface oil. (Note: while PREFLASH has soothing ingredients that prevent it from stripping your skin, it does such a good job at removing oil that we do not recommend using it as your daily cleanser. Once a week before your weekly Flash is all you need!)
Does dermaplaning hurt?
One final question! We are happy to report the answer is no, dermaplaning does not hurt. When you use LUXE+ you’ll hear a soft buzzing and feel a gentle vibration as you glide the device over your skin. It won’t pull or tug on your facial fuzz—you’ll just see flakes and fuzzies falling off, and we can report that is very satisfying.
