Sonic Dermaplaning: Your Secret To Smooth, Natural-Looking Holiday Makeup

Sonic Dermaplaning: Your Secret To Smooth, Natural-Looking Holiday Makeup
Go Back

The holidays are coming and that means family, friends, fun—and photos! If you want makeup that looks smooth and natural in person and in pictures, you’ll need to prep your canvas. And one of the easiest and most effective ways to do it is by sonic dermaplaning. This gentle, dermatologist-approved method of exfoliation creates a smooth and flawless surface for makeup application. We’ll tell you how to do it and give you all the tips you need.

Why sonic dermaplaning improves makeup application

Stops foundation from clinging to peach fuzz

Ever look at a close-up photo of your face and see a “halo” of peach fuzz? When foundation clings to facial fuzz, it can appear even more noticeable—especially if you wear loose mineral or powder foundation. LUXE+ Sonic Dermaplaning uses sonic technology and a specialized safety blade to gently “shave” away peach fuzz, so your foundation will look smooth and natural—no more clinging to little hairs.

Prevents cakey foundation

“Cakey foundation is a direct result of dead skin cell build-up,” explains licensed master esthetician Billie Jo Bond. “Your foundation won’t be able to adhere to your skin as well, so it ‘sits’ on your skin’s surface and cakes up.” This is especially true if you’re using a matte or longwear formula. Sonic dermaplaning gently removes the oldest layer of dead skin cells and debris, so your foundation will have a smooth surface to adhere to.

Creates a smooth, flake-free canvas

Dry, flaky patches can seriously mess with your makeup game. “When you apply foundation, blush or bronzer over flaky skin, it’s going to stick to dry patches,” says Bond. You could end up with an uneven application and color that looks off. Sonic dermaplaning allows you to gently remove flakes, so you’ll have an even application and true-to-tone color.

Improves skin quality and luminosity

The better your skin quality, the better your foundation is going to look! LUXE+ Sonic Dermaplaning not only improves your skin’s texture, it also minimizes the look of fine lines and wrinkles and reduces the appearance of dark spots.

Helps your makeup last longer

Dead skin cell build-up doesn’t just cause cakey or uneven foundation—it also means your makeup won’t last as long. Removing that superficial layer of dead skin cells will help any type of foundation (whether it’s powder, cream or liquid) last longer.

Top 5 tips for sonic dermaplaning & flawless foundation

1. Prep your skin for sonic dermaplaning

First, cleanse with PREFLASH and pat your skin dry thoroughly. PREFLASH removes surface oil and temporarily “tightens” skin—making peach fuzz and dead skin easier to remove. And remember, always use fresh MicroFine Edge to prevent the spread of acne-causing bacteria.

2. Flash 1x per week (that’s all it takes!)

LUXE+ Sonic Dermaplaning delivers professional-quality exfoliation and peach fuzz removal, and it only needs to be used once a week. “Consistency is key to improving your skin quality,” says Bond. “With regular weekly use, you’ll see younger and healthier looking skin.”

3. Wait a minimum 6-12 hours before applying makeup

Avoid applying foundation right after you’ve exfoliated. “Freshly exfoliated skin needs time to calm and rebalance,” explains Bond. In general, wait 6-12 hours after sonic dermaplaning before applying makeup. At DERMAFLASH, our staffers like to Flash in the evening and then apply skincare. In the morning, your skin is ready for makeup!

4. Apply serum and/or primer before foundation

Before you apply foundation, apply a serum and/or primer. This will give your makeup a super-smooth base to cling to, and you can choose a formula that delivers additional skincare benefits. If you need lightweight hydration and line-smoothing, HYDRAFLASH Active Cocooning Serum is ideal. If you’d like to reduce the appearance of pores, try a pore-minimizing primer like Laura Gellar Spackle Perfecting Primer.

5. Set your makeup

A setting powder or spray gives you the final finishing touch to help your makeup last. This might not be necessary for every day, but for the holiday season, it gives you extra insurance for a long-lasting makeup look. Holiday photos, here you come!
