Summer is officially here and the sun is shining! If you’re a fan of dermaplaning (or if you’re thinking about trying it for the first time), you may be wondering “Is it safe to be in the sun after dermaplaning?” It’s a smart question, and we have the answers you need right here.
What does dermaplaning do for you skin?
Before we get into the question of dermaplaning and sun exposure, we wanted to do a quick refresher on what dermaplaning does for your skin (it will all come together, we promise)! Long story short, dermaplaning gently “shaves” off the outermost layer of dead skin cells—revealing fresher, more radiant skin underneath. In the process, it also removes vellus hair (aka peach fuzz) from your face. So, you’re getting gentle exfoliation and peach fuzz removal all in one.
With DERMAFLASH LUXE+ Sonic Dermaplaning, you’re also getting the added benefits of Sonic Technology. This helps the device glide smoothly across your skin without pulling or tugging like a cheap razor, and also allows the proprietary MicroFine™ Edge to get right underneath peach fuzz. So, you’re getting the closest shave possible while still protecting your skin and treating it gently. (Want to know more? Step right this way for a deeper dive.)
Okay, now that we know what sonic dermaplaning does, let’s get back to the question of how the sun impacts freshly dermaplaned skin.
Dermaplaning and the sun: What you need to know
As we mentioned, dermaplaning is a form of exfoliation. And like all forms of exfoliation, it removes the oldest layer of dead skin cells from your skin’s surface. That means you’re revealing a layer of fresh, new, “baby” skin. That fresh, new skin is temporarily more vulnerable to sun damage, so it’s best to avoid direct sun exposure for 48-72 hours after dermaplaning.
Now, we wanted to be super clear about what you can and can’t do. When we say avoid direct sun exposure, we don’t mean you have to hide indoors! It’s perfectly fine to go about your daily activities (with SPF, of course). Just don’t toss your SPF out the window and plan to spend the entire day at the beach right after you dermaplane! When you think about it, it’s just common sense. If you were taking a baby to the beach, you’d make sure to protect their delicate skin—so treat your “baby” skin with care, too.
How to protect your skin from the sun after dermaplaning
It’s easy to minimize sun damage risk after dermaplaning, all you have to do is follow a few simple steps:
1. Wear a Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (or higher) every day. We prefer mineral sunscreens, which tend to be less irritating for sensitive skin types and are typically recommended by dermatologists post-procedure.
2. Wear hats and UV protective clothes. Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and UV protective clothing give you an added layer of protection. (And, really, how chic is a hat and big sunglasses combo in the summer?)
3. Avoid direct, prolonged sun exposure. Dermatologists recommend minimizing your sun exposure during peak UV hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and seeking shade when you can. If you’re a beach lover and a skincare lover, consider investing in a pop-up UV protective tent for the summer season.
4. Don’t over-exfoliate. Too much exfoliation leaves your skin vulnerable to sun damage, especially if you’re not diligent about sun protection. We admit we’re biased, but one of the many things we love about sonic dermaplaning is that you only need to do it once a week to keep your skin fresh, glowing and fuzz-free.
There you have it! Dermaplaning is a safe and easy way to keep your skin glowing during the summer. Follow these guidelines, always wear your SPF, and enjoy your “baby skin” glow!
