What Is Clinical Testing in Skincare?

“Clinically tested” or “clinically proven” are terms that refer to scientific studies performed on human participants, in order to measure how a skincare product or device affects the skin. These studies are typically conducted in independent research laboratories under controlled conditions and are designed to produce measurable data about skin improvements.

Clinical Testing May Measure:

  • Skin Hydration
  • Skin tone + brightness
  • Fine lines + wrinkles
  • Oil production
  • Skin elasticity
  • Texture and smoothness
  • Pore size

Why Clinical Testing Matters in Skincare

Many skincare brands make claims about their products—but clinical testing provides scientific proof.

Clinical Testing Helps Verify That a Product:

  • Produces measurable improvements in the skin
  • Performs consistently over time
  • Works on real people
  • Meets professional research standards

For Consumers, Clinical Testing Helps Answer Important Questions:

  • Does the product actually work?
  • How quickly do results appear?
  • What specific skin improvements can I expect?

How Skincare Clinical
Testing Works

In the skincare industry, there are two standard ways to test the results of a product or device: instrumental analysis and consumer perception tests:

Instrumental analysis uses scientific instruments to measure physical changes in the skin.

  • Provides “objective” data (i.e. fact-based + measurable) about a product's efficacy.
  • Evaluated by research professionals who are NOT affiliated with the brand.

Consumer perception tests evaluate how participants feel about their skin after using a product.

  • Provides “subjective” data (i.e. personal opinions + points of view) about a product's performance.
  • Testers receive a product and usage instructions, and they fill out a detailed questionnaire rating the product's efficacy + performance .

Both types of testing deliver valuable insights, and at DERMAFLASH, we perform instrumental analysis and consumer perception tests on all our products.

Key differences

Instrumental Analysis vs Consumer Perception

Instrumental Analasis

  • Objective measurements
  • Conducted in labs
  • Uses scientific instruments
  • Measures physical skin changes

Consumer Perception Tests

  • Subjective feedback
  • Conducted at home or in labs
  • Based on user experience
  • Measures perceived improvements

“At DERMAFLASH, it's so important for us to have clinical proof that our devices and products make a real difference in your skin.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Clinical testing can cost tens of thousands of dollars and some brands choose not to invest in it. At DERMAFLASH, clinical testing is a priority for us. We want to have proof that our products and devices deliver real, measurable results for your skin—so we choose to invest in clinical testing every time.

A brand should clearly state in the footnote what type of test has been performed. For example, the DERMAFLASH footnotes clearly state “Consumer panel survey” or “Instrumental analysis.” You can also tell by the language used in the claim. “Subjects agree…” or “Subjects felt…”indicates an opinion (i.e.a consumer perception test). “Subjects had…” or “Subjects showed…”indicates a measured data point (i.e.an instrumental analysis).

No, DERMAFLASH has never and will never test on animals. We are cruelty-free.

Both instrumental analysis and consumer perception tests provide valuable insights. An instrumental analysis delivers objective data, while consumer perception tests allow subjects to share their opinions. Subjects are also asked to keep a journal about their experiences (including both any negative reactions and/or beneficial results).

In vitro literally means “in glass” and refers to testing done outside a living organism— typically in a lab dish (Petri dish), a test tube or cultured cells (skin cells grown in a lab). In vitro means “in the living” and refers to testing done on human participants. All of our tests at DERMAFLASH are done in vivo on real people.

Before testing starts, subjects undergo what’s called a “washout” period to make sure no outside factors will influence the results. During the washout period, subjects stop using any skincare products or treatments could impact test results. After the washout period, subjects have a baseline image taken. Testers use the product as instructed, and they’re monitored throughout the process. Results are often compared at different time intervals, such as immediately after using the product and after several weeks. When testing is complete, the findings are evaluated by researchers and results are shared with DERMAFLASH.
