Do you need some tips to get the best results from your new LUXE+ Sonic Dermaplaning device? Or have you been Flashing for a while and you’d like to perfect your technique? No matter what your goal is, we’re here to help. We asked our Head of Training and Education, Jorie Fieldman, to share her top tips for a perfect Flash.
Always start with PREFLASH®
Prepping your canvas is the key to a perfect Flash that removes every trace of fuzz and flakes—and for that you need PREFLASH. It’s formulated to remove oil and leave your skin temporarily taut and dry, so peach fuzz and dead skin cells are easier to remove. “PREFLASH is more of a prep than a cleanser,” Jorie explains. “It's going to de-fat the skin and leave you feeling super dry, which is exactly what we want. But don’t worry, we're going to bring all that moisture back to the skin after we've Flashed.”
Jorie’s insider tip: “I actually like to sit and wait for 5 to 10 minutes after I've used PREFLASH, so my skin feels very tight and that way I get an even better result.”
Pick your Sonic Speed
After you prep with PREFLASH, pat your skin dry with a towel. “Make sure your skin is bone dry and then you're ready to Flash,” Jorie says. Your LUXE+ device has 2 speeds to choose from. “You're going to press it once for the first speed and twice for the second speed. The second speed is just a little bit more invigorating. It's up to personal preference what you want to use—both speeds will give you really beautiful results.”
Now you might be wondering, what is Sonic Technology actually doing for my skin? A few things! First, the high-level sonic vibrations help your device glide super-smoothly over your skin, without pulling or tugging like a cheap razor. Second, the sonic vibrations help you get right underneath peach fuzz for more effective removal. And last but not least, Sonic Technology increases microcirculation, which gives you an instant glow and supports collagen production long-term.
Jorie’s insider tip: “If you have more sensitive skin, start with the first speed. You can also use different speeds on different areas of your face to customize your Flash"
De-fuzz like a pro with Jorie's 3 key tips
When you’re ready to Flash, start by inserting a new Microfine Edge. “Each edge is a one-time use and that's just for safety and hygiene reasons. We never want to reintroduce any bacteria back to the skin,” Jorie explains. These proprietary Edges also have a custom-engineered Safety Cage that protects your skin from nicks and cuts. Got your Edge in? Let’s get started with Jorie’s 3 key technique points:
1. Hold your skin tight with your free hand. “You never want your skin to buckle under the device, so always hold your skin tight,” Jorie says. “And as you're moving away from your free hand, you're going to want to continuously pull the skin tight. So you're always moving the free hand along with your device.”
2. Use short, feathery strokes. “I like to think of it as similar to sweeping a pile of dust into a dustpan,” Jorie says. “Doing those short strokes really ensures you’re removing all of that buildup from the skin.”
3. Hold your device at a 45° angle. “My trick here is no matter what direction you're going in, we always want to lead with the Edge. I typically move from the outside in, so my Edge will be the first thing that I'm seeing. If you want to go from the inside out, the Edge will lead the way. Same thing with up and down.”
Jorie’s insider tip: “I like to move towards hair that I want to keep So around the ear and jaw, I like to go up towards my hairline. When I Flash my forehead, I separate it into two sections. For the lower section I'll go down towards my eyebrows, and for the upper section I flip the device around and go up towards my hairline. That way I just have a little bit more visibility and you’re not going to take off any hair that you want to keep.”
One more note: Keep in mind to avoid your lips, eyes, nose and any raised areas. “We always want to avoid active acne, raised moles anything that might get irritated by having a blade pass over it,” Jorie adds.
Finish with your favorite skincare
"When you're done, there's no downtime whatsoever,” Jorie says. “So you can go right in with your favorite serum, moisturizer or face mask. We're removing the barrier to penetration so it allows your products to work so much better.” You can use whatever products you typically use in your skincare routine, but one note: It’s a good idea to wait 48 hours before using a retinol, since that ingredient can be sensitizing.
We love using a hydrating and barrier-boosting serum like our Hydraflash Active Cocooning Serum, which is formulated with clinically proven ingredients to firm, brighten and support skin health. Happy Flashing!
