Does Cold Water Shrink Your Pores?

Does Cold Water Shrink Your Pores?
Go Back

If you’re interested in skincare, you’ve probably seen videos of people giving themselves an “ice facial” (literally rubbing an ice cube on their faces) or dunking their faces into bowls of ice water—all in an attempt to shrink pores. Here's the truth: while cold temperatures can temporarily make pores look tighter, exposing your skin to true freezing temperatures can actually damage your skin’s barrier and leave your skin more irritated, reactive and inflamed over time.

Here’s what to do instead, to help your pores look smaller instantly and in the long-term. (And yes, cold therapy is a part of it—we’ll get to that and tell you how to do it right!)

Why Do Cold Temperatures Make Pores Look Smaller?

Cold temperatures cause what’s known as “vasoconstriction”— a narrowing of the blood vessels just underneath the skin’s surface. This temporarily reduces blood flow and fluid in the area, which can make skin look firmer and “tighter.” When the surrounding skin looks tighter, pores appear smaller by comparison—even though the pore itself hasn't changed shape. It's a real, visible effect—but it's temporary. Once your skin returns to its normal temperature, that tightened look fades.

Your Plan for Smaller-Looking Pores, Instantly and Long-Term

If you want pores that look smaller and tighter (not just temporarily, but for the long haul), the key is keeping them as clear and debris-free as possible. Here’s why: When your pores fill with oil, dead skin cells and buildup, the pore lining gets stretched out. This makes your pores look larger and more visible.

1. Clear Out the Gunk That’s Stretching Your Pore Lining

And we don’t mean by squeezing! To remove pore-clogging debris, it’s key to use a tool that will help you extract gunk gently, without damaging your skin. DERMAPORE+ uses high-level ultrasonic vibration (the highest speed on the market at 35kHz) to gently loosen dirt, oil and debris trapped inside pores. Its custom-curved, ionically charged spatula then works to draw that debris out, without the pain or irritation of a harsh manual pore scraper.

Without that gunk stretching out your pores, they’ll look smaller and tighter. The proof: In an independent clinical study using scientific instruments, 97% of users had a significant reduction in pore size immediately after using DERMAPORE+ with PREP MIST.

2. Prevent Debris From Building Back Up

Clearing out pores is step one, but keeping them clear is what makes results last. That's why a gentle daily exfoliating toner like Botanical Ketoacid Toner is essential. It’s formulated with a sensitive-skin safe blend of pore-clearing acids including Lactic, Malic + encapsulated Salicylic Acid, plus Botanical Ketoacids derived from the hibiscus flower. Used regularly, it helps prevent oil and dead skin cells from building back up inside the pore lining, so pores are less likely to stretch out. In clinical testing, 97% of users showed improvement in pore size after 4 weeks of consistent use.

3. Cool Your Skin the Safe Way — NOT With Ice!

Here’s where cold therapy comes in. Instead of reaching for an ice cube, use DERMAFLASH COOL to instantly refresh and visibly tighten your skin. It’s engineered to reach the optimal temperature to cool and de-puff—without the microbiome-disrupting, barrier-damaging risk of true freezing temperatures.

Used together, this three-step approach addresses pores from every angle: clearing out what's already clogging them, preventing new buildup, and using safe dermatologist-recommended cooling for an instant, tightened finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does putting ice on your face permanently shrink pores?

No. Ice can temporarily constrict blood vessels and make pores look tighter for a short time, but it doesn't change the physical size of the pore.

Is it safe to put ice cubes directly on your skin?

Direct ice contact isn't recommended. Leaving ice on skin too long can cause an ice burn, a mild form of frostbite, and can compromise your skin's protective barrier. A device engineered for safe, optimal cooling temperature is a better choice than raw ice.

What actually makes pores look bigger?

Pores look larger when they're stretched by trapped oil, dead skin cells and debris. The more buildup inside a pore, the more visible and stretched it appears—which is why clearing and preventing clogs has a bigger long-term impact on pore appearance than temperature alone.

How often should I use cold therapy for pores?

Cold therapy, like a quick session with DERMAFLASH COOL, can be used any time you want an instant refreshed, tightened look—it's gentle enough to fit into a daily routine alongside pore-clearing and exfoliating steps.
